Mindfulness Meditation & 3hr Hike - Woodberry Wetlands & The Lee Valley
Sun, May 7, 2017, 10:15 PM – Mon, May 8, 2017, 3:00 PM BST
A day of mindfulness meditation and great hiking around North London's lesser known nature reserves, waterways and trails. We'll start the day in the splendid serenity of the Gillespie local nature reserve, a little known green escape located just a few minutes’ walk from Finsbury Park or Arsenal Tube Station.
After a formal group meditation at the Ecology Centre and a delicious and nutritious lunch, we’ll head east on our hike to Woodberry Wetlands. Opened in 2016 by Sir Richard Attenborough, the 11 hectares of reed-fringed ponds provide a haven for a multitude of wildlife. From wintering populations of pochard, shoveler, tufted and gadwall ducks, to reed warbler and bunting who have migrated from Africa for spring and summer.
Continuing on, we pick up the eastern section of the Capital Ring Walk, (CRW), part of the 78mile loop that circumnavigates the capital and head through Clisshold Park, through Abney Park - Stoke Newington's eerily picturesque graveyard and on to Lee Valley, London's largest green space and finally following the River Lee south to the Iconic Olympic Park in Stratford.
Here we conclude our day just a short distance from Stratford Station.

For the meditation: • Comfortable clothes that don’t restrict your breathing
For the hike:
• Comfortable hiking clothes suitable for the weather
• Waterproof jacket and over trousers (if rain is forecasted)
• Day bag – 25-35L rucksack to carry water, extra layers, snacks
• Comfortable hiking shoes or boots – we will be on public footpaths & hills that can be muddy
Tell me more about the group meditation?
The group meditation will take place in the Ecology Centre, surrounded by nature and dappled in natural sunlight it’s ideal for connecting with the breath. We have chairs and a limited number of cushions.
What is mindful hiking?
The hiking portion of the day is just like any other type of hiking. We do not walk at snail’s pace as in walking meditation. We merely carry the mindfulness we cultivate in the group sitting meditation with us on the hike, focusing on the present moment as we enjoy the sounds, sights and smells – and as we get to know one another.
How tough is the hiking?
Easy - flat route but you must be able to walk for 3 - 4 hours.
What if it’s raining? ‘
There is no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothes’ – Please come equipped. Hiking in the rain when properly clad in waterproof clothing can be as relaxing, pleasant and as a mindful as any sunny day. We listen to the rain drops as we hike – step by step, breath by breath.
What's the refund policy?
