Stress is an inevitable part of life. It can fuel great achievements, and it can also wreak havoc on our work enjoyment, our relationships and our health! It all depends on the attitudes we bring to it. Stress is pretty much always harmful – if we drive ourselves hard without breaks!

This experiential workshop will introduce Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Stress Reduction and Wellbeing, based on the world-renowned Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) programs. MBSR offers breathing awareness practices, mindfulness meditation, body scanning, and gentle yoga stretching.

Thousands of studies on MBSR, continue to demonstrate its many benefits including:

  • Relief from stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and chronic conditions;

  • Improved focus and attention, health, immunity, well-being, and relationships;

  • Increased ability to “respond, not react” to stress;

  • Greater sense of wellbeing and connection to yourself and the world;

  • Cultivates kindness, openness, gratitude, and positive states.

MSC is a relatively new field in the past 15 years, founded by Kristin Neff PhD. It combines mindfulness with practices that bring a sense of warmth and greater acceptance and kindness for ourselves and others, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience.

You’ll leave this workshop with a toolkit of simple mindfulness practices, and learn about:

Mindfulness: what it is, and why it’s become so popular, particularly in the Bay Area.

Self-compassion: How to access and apply it regularly, even in moments of high intensity.

How mindfulness and self-compassion are helping professionals across all industries – education, healthcare, tech, traditional business, and more!

Specific practices that you will learn and can use on a daily basis:

  • Learning to STOP: breathing with awareness - grounding, calming your body and soothing your nervous system;

  • How to turn the inner critic into an inner coach;

  • Recognizing what’s right in our lives and learning the “what’s not wrong” practice;

  • Simple, powerful mindful self-compassion practices - regular practice makes it automatic in stressful or difficult times;

  • Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude - how it’s the gateway drug to a happier life!

Renée Burgard, MS, LCSW, Mindfulness & Health, Los Altos, CA

Renée Burgard earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Psychology and Health & Medical Sciences at Stanford and UC Berkeley, including a year studying neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with Marian Diamond, a founder of modern neuroscience. She trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), with Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and with Dan Siegel MD in Interpersonal Neurobiology. Burgard is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, owner of Mindfulness & Health in Los Altos, CA, and a leading Bay Area MBSR and MSC educator, teacher trainer, and consultant. She founded and has taught MBSR programs at Google, Apple, and other corporations, Stanford University, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and K-12 and the PsyD program at CIIS. She is a frequent speaker, and workshop and retreat leader for institutions in the Bay Area, and a writer on mindfulness and psychology. She was ordained as a lay monastic by Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, and leads a meditation community and retreats in his Plum Village tradition. She is passionate about communicating the practices of mindfulness and self-compassion. She is also a professional photographer, and loves to spend time with friends and family, music, poetry, the visual arts, and nature.
