Description

Join Meg McElwee and Katrina Rodabaugh for a three-day Mindful Making Retreat in the Hudson Valley. Have you ever wondered how to design meaning and mindfulness into your garments before you start sewing? What if we chose materials based on their ability to age, dye, or be repaired? And what if we incorporated pocket linings, neck facings, and generous hems not just because they’re beautiful, but because they create canvases for stitching personal love notes, sketching favorite herbs, or studying moon phases? A Slow Fashion wardrobe should be as unique as the individual building it, but here’s one thing it should always contain—meaning. Our handmade garments can be beautiful, custom-fit, thoughtfully-designed, and also act as handmade treasures.

Join fiber artists and authors, Meg McElwee (Sew Liberated) and Katrina Rodabaugh, for this special Slow Fashion retreat in Katrina's carriage barn studio in the beautiful Hudson Valley of Upstate NY. Meg and Katrina will lead participants through sessions on sewing, stitching, and designing meaning and mindfulness into wearable garments. Over the course of the weekend, students will make one handmade garment (Meg's Forager Vest pattern) complete with hand-stitched treasures hidden in the pockets, hemlines, or neck-facings like amulets or talisman. Students will be guided through the process of prepping, cutting, sewing, stitching, and making one special garment while considering how to design meaningful details into a garment from the beginning. While the weekend focuses on practical skills like sewing and stitching, it will also include conversations about making garments personal, embedding meaning, prioritizing Slow Fashion in sewing, and gathering with likeminded folks to build friendships, sewing skills, and eco-awareness. As an added bonus, we’ll also experiment with natural plant dyes that could result in the fabric for patch pockets.

The retreat will include two lovingly-made local, vegetarian lunches; snacks and tea throughout; special materials for stitching like Sashiko thread and plant-dyed fabric samples; and an opportunity to build community from the retreat-like setting of Katrina’s converted barn studio and dye gardens. (Katrina’s studio is in the mid-Hudson Valley of Upstate NY, just two hours north of Manhattan. Exact address will be given once registration is complete and paid in full.) Space for this workshop is limited to just 12 students. A few sewing machines will be available for shared use but it’s best if you can bring your own machine with you if traveling by car. There are several lovely hotels, inns, and Airbnbs in the area not to mention numerous wonderful restaurants. The studio is only accessible by car as Katrina lives on a country road in a 200-year-old farmhouse surrounded by her neighbors’ local apple orchard, organic vegetable and flower farm, and a hobbyist vineyard. There is no public transportation to the studio site. Please note: There are no refunds for this retreat. Thank you.

Workshop schedule: Friday, August 16 from 3-6pm; Saturday, August 17 from 10-5pm; Sunday, August 18 from 10-5pm. Participants will need to bring the fabric, notions, and materials for their Forager Vest. Details about all materials, venue, and schedule will be sent to registered participants.
