Science-based Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a 2,500-year old practice that quiets, calms and focuses the mind, and so strengthens physical health, cognitive performance and emotional intelligence. Practicing mindfulness creates neural pathways that establish positive new habits and behaviors. Repetition strengthens the network, until the new behaviors become the new normal.

Today's science-based mindfulness is an exercise program for the brain. It is neural training for the awareness, attention and emotional control that drive performance.


Course Overview:

Supervisors and managers are responsible for our largest employee populations - yet, according to Gallup Research, 82% of workers consider their managers to be ineffective leaders. Many otherwise high-potential managers are blind to gaps in their self awareness, emotional intelligence and relationship skills. This diminishes their effectiveness - and can inadvertently damage morale, destroy engagement and discourage top talent.

Recognizing this, Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, Kellogg, London School of Economics, INSEAD and other top U.S. and international business schools, are incorporating mindful leadership practices into their core management curricula.

This course is designed to bring mindful leadership into today's operating environment, by providing a comprehensive introduction to science-based, performance-focused mindfulness - and a step-by-step process for leaders at every level of the organization.


Week 1 - Introduction to Science-based Mindfulness

Three decades of medical research have confirmed that the mind can physically change the brain and body - and mindfulness proves it. This class is a comprehensive introduction to the nature, science, hands-on practice, and application of modern mindfulness.

You will learn:

  • The scope and context of secular modern mindfulness

  • The neuroscience and psychology of mindfulness neural training

  • How mindfulness is applied to strengthen competencies, and solve business problems

  • The foundational formal and informal mindfulness practices


Week 2 - Reduce Leadership Stress and Burnout

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have named chronic stress the most dangerous global epidemic of the new century, and confirm that the workplace is far and away the primary source. Multiple studies also report that managers and executives are significantly more impacted than the workforce at large. This class is an exploration of strategies and practices that relieve leadership pressures, anxieties and stress-related burnout.

You will learn:

  • The evolutionary wiring and triggers that creates negativity, chronic stress and mental exhaustion

  • How mindfulness is applied to reframe worry, rumination, self-critical and depressive thinking

  • Mindfulness practices that reduce chronic stress, and increases mental and emotional resilience


Week 3 - Increase Focus and Attention Control

Information overload, workplace distraction and the addictive properties of digital communications and social media are steadily eroding our attention spans and capabilities to do deep work. We’re all affected to some degree, and managers are struggling to overcome the challenge themselves, even as they try to help their teams stay on task. This class explores practices that physically strengthen brain networks associated with focus, concentration and attention control.

You will learn:

  • The sources and science of information overload, digital distraction and workplace ADD.

  • How mindfulness is applied to suppress distraction, and increase focus

  • Mindfulness practices that strengthen our abilities to direct attention and sustain concentration


Week 4 - Earn Trust, Confidence and Loyalty

Effective leaders create trust and confidence through observable acts of integrity, fairness, good judgment and unselfish behaviors - all functions of character and consistency that flow from positive values and beliefs. This class explores practices that strengthen the mindset and behavioral traits that encourage trust.

You will learn:

  • The fundamentals of self awareness, authenticity and leadership presence

  • How mindfulness is applied to strengthen personal ethics, integrity and trustworthiness

  • Mindfulness practices to develop the traits that inspire trust, confidence and loyalty


Week 5 - Lead Cultural and Organizational Change

Our 2-million year-old brains are wired to fear change and loathe uncertainty. How can we overcome our own evolutionary resistance, while helping our people successfully navigate their way through cultural and organizational change? This class explores mindfulness strategies for calm leadership amid change and uncertainty.

You will learn:

  • How change and uncertainty triggers fear that hijacks our emotional state

  • How mindfulness helps us consciously navigate from the known to an uncertain future state

  • Mindfulness practices that develop the mental skill to embrace change


Week 6 - Diminish Toxicity and Conflict

Reports of harrassment, bullying, aggression and anger in the workplace are continuing to scale upwards, year-over-year. This is an especially disturbing trend that lands squarely on managers' shoulders. Studies show that line managers now spend over 40% of their time mediating conflict - and that many are inadvertently contributing to it, through low self-awareness, empathy or emotional control. This class explores mindfulness practices that reduce conflict and increase empathy, acceptance, tolerance, and emotional regulation.

You will learn:

  • How unconscious bias, reactivity, frustration and impatience escalate conflict

  • How mindfulness is applied to stop, unwind, and proceed strategically

  • Mindfulness practices to develop situational awareness and emotional control


Week 7 - Lead with Social and Emotional Intelligence

Science has proven that self-awareness, empathy, compassion and social skills aren't immutable traits, they are trainable skills that can be intentionally developed through neural exercise. This class examines the visceral power of social and emotional intelligence, and how to strengthen these foundational inter-personal capabilities.

You will learn:

  • The framework and competencies that comprise social and emotional intelligence

  • How mindfulness strengthens self-awareness, social-awareness, empathy and communication

  • Mindfulness practices for care, kindness and compassionate behaviors.


Week 8 - Influence and Mobilize Individuals and Teams

The mindfulness outcomes of greater trust, rapport and likability lead to greater influence. At the same time, listening more deeply and acting with compassion strengthen our abilities to inspire, motivate and persuade. This class examines the core leadership skills of influencing and mobilizing people to achieve common objectives.

You will learn:

  • Why industrial-era command-and-control management is obsole

  • The imperative of influence in a flat, networked organization

  • Mindfulness practices for effective influence and leadership action
