Mindful Latching: the Art of Movement and the Science of Biomechanics

The Master Class with Tatiana Kondrashova, MA, IBCLC and Maya Bolman, BA, BSN, IBCLC

Why do some parents breastfeed without thinking about correct latching, while others experience difficulties despite education and instruction? Does learning a skill become more challenging when parents are under pressure to perform? Can we teach the art of movement? Can we apply the laws of biomechanics in latching?

By exploring these questions, the workshop will help to individualize latching for the breastfeeding dyad. The presenters will demonstrate how to assist parents with mindful latching while using the principles of biomechanics and stability along with the art of movement therapy.

Objectives:

  • Describe a mindful approach to latching and how to apply it in a lactation consultant's practice

  • Teach parents to move with minimal effort and maximum efficiency while latching

  • Eliminate unnecessary muscle tension and inefficient movements

  • Use coordination and balance while positioning and latching

  • Improve the range of maternal movements in the early postpartum period

  • Troubleshoot to achieve the successful latch

IBLCE CERPs: applied for

Meet the instructors:

Tatiana Kondrashova is one of the first consultants in Russia to become certified as an IBCLC in 2011. She worked as IBLCE Country coordinator for Russia and, along with Irina Ruyknova, IBCLC co-created the first educational program “New Degree” for IBLCE exam candidates in Russian.

Traditionally the art of breastfeeding in Russia is passed from generation to generation. Tatiana loves to continue these traditions as well as implement the biomechanical science in her unique approach to teaching latch and hand expression.

Maya Bolman, a registered nurse (RN), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is renowned for her work in promoting hand expression in nursing mothers. She recognizes that teaching mothers these basic tools helps empower them to work through breastfeeding challenges including engorgement, plugged ducts, separation from the infant, and milk supply concerns. She has worked with Dr. Witt to create an instructional video and conduct research on the effectiveness of Therapeutic Breast Massage in Lactation (TBML) both in the office and as a treatment at home for mothers.

Tatiana and Maya have been collaborating on many projects since meeting at a conference in Moscow, Russia in 2009. They share a passion for learning and teaching lactation providers to empower parents to work through breastfeeding challenges.
