In this daylong we ask the critical question, for those who identify as white, how can we mindfully work to unlearn racism?  How do we hold the suffering in our lives and in the world?  As white people who care about racial justice, we acknowledge that we have been shaped by a system of unearned privilege that leads to suffering for ourselves, our community, and the larger society.

How can those who identify as white engage with the vital issues of racial justice in our world?  With great attention to the movement of our hearts, we will explore through meditation, dharma talks and guided conversations how we bring our practice to bear on this important dimension of our lives.

Arinna Weisman is the founding teacher of Insight Meditation Center of the Pioneer Valley and Lotus Sisters, Seattle. She is co-author of A Beginner's Guide to Insight Meditation, and was the first teacher to lead retreats for the Lgbtq gender queer community. Her teaching is infused with her political activism.

Trudy Goodman, PHD is the founder of InsightLA and is currently the senior Vipassana teacher in Los Angeles.

Diana Winston is the Director of Mindfulness Education at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center, and on the Teachers Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. She is the author of “Fully Present: The Science, Art, and Practice of Mindfulness” and “Wide Awake: A Buddhist Guide for Teens.”

Noah Levine is the founder of Against the Stream and the author of "Dharma Punx", "Against the Stream", "Heart of the Revolution" and "Refuge Recovery."

This event is offered on a "by dana" basis, allowing the teachings to continue by offering generously and with gratitute.  The suggested donation is $20 - $150 sliding scale.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The “Mindful and White” daylong retreat will be held at 1001a Colorado Avenue, between 10th and 11th (click here for map).

This is the Santa Monica home of Against the Stream and was formerly used by the Santa Monica Zen Center.  The entrance to the meditation center is in the alley that runs behind the Writer’s Junction.  The building is shared with the Writer’s Junction who have a big sign and are on the corner of 10th and Colorado. Please don’t bother them as there is no access from there. We are on the other side of the building, in the alley, behind the brick wall.

If a ten minute walk (approximately 8 blocks) is all right with you, there is easy to locate public parking at the Santa Monica Main Library Public Parking Lot, 1350 7th St, Santa Monica, CA 90405.  The maximum daily fee for Sundays is $5.00.

Because of the light rail construction on Colorado, there are no longer meters on Colorado and very few spaces. There are meters on Broadway and free parking along the side streets. Please be careful parking on the side streets and make sure you read all posted signs. There are some restrictions on the residential streets.

DO NOT PARK in the alley by the entrance; your car WILL BE TOWED. We do not have any spaces available in the alley so you should not park there.

We recommend that you bring your lunch due to time constraints.  We plan to allocate one hour for lunch between 12.30 and 1.30 pm.  Hot water for tea will be provided.

If you are unable to bring your lunch there is Bay Cities Italian Deli (1517 Lincoln Blvd) and a Von’s with a Starbucks inside (710 Broadway) both within walking distance.
