Description

The state of AI in a nutshell: Why we need a different approach to crack the brain code

When developing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the common approach is to focus on algorithms and to build faster computers. For a true breakthrough in AI however, different approaches may be necessary. Prof. Christoph von der Malsburg and Pascal Kaufmann take you out to a journey on the current state of the art in AI. Contrasting latest insights from neuroscience with current algorithmic approaches in AI, an explanation is given why intelligence may not be about big data and why a different approach is needed for a breakthrough in AI. The recently launched Mindfire program uses novel blockchain technology to support a worldwide rally for novel approaches to AI. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session and, upon request, interviews with the speakers presenting.

About the speakers

Prof. Christoph von der Malsburg devoted his life to the elucidation of the function of the brain and received numerous international awards. Von der Malsburg headed the European Neural Network Society and is a recognized pioneer of computational neuroscience. He has been appointed recently as strategic and technical advisor to the European Human Brain Project, taking on a critical view on current developments in AI. He believes that enough experimental data is already out there to decode the human mind, that progress most urgently needs a new conceptual framework .

Pascal Kaufmann is a Neuroscientist, tech-entrepreneur and founder of the Mindfire program. Kaufmann connected living brains to machines at Northwestern University, IL, USA and built one of the first cyborgs, feeding information directly into brain tissue. He takes on a sceptical view on the current state of AI and is convinced that Human like Artificial Intelligence can and must be created by and for the people as an answer to the challenges of the 21st century. He believes that by uniting talents around the globe facilitated by blockchain technology, a quantum leap towards human like AI is possible.
