Event description

Description

Considering the lens as an object, we will examine how a lens functions optically to bend and distort light in order to better understand the relationship between the object and image/video/projections it can produce. Exploration and experimental modes of inquiry are encouraged. Starting with a brief lecture exploring the origins and development of lens technology for scientific and artistic uses, we will then move into the flameworking studio and work with hot glass to produce unique, one-of- a-kind of lenses for use with phone cameras and SLR cameras.

During the second day, we will put our lenses to use, experimenting and exploring optics and distortion in order to gain insight into the fundamentals of photography with the goal of creating unique images, projections, and video. The workshop will culminate with a group discussion reviewing the images made and examining the functionality of the lenses themselves as art objects. No previous experience with glass or photography is necessary. Please bring your camera(s) to class on the first day.
