Event description

Description

Acclaimed chef, restaurant owner, and story teller, Pierre Thiam takes Christopher on a culinary journey through Senegal at our July Milk Street Session. After teaching Christopher the basics of Senagalise cooking, the two will answer your questions and talk together before we all enjoy tastes of Pierre's food.

Pierre will be signing copies of "Senegal" (Lake Isle Press, 2015), available at the event from Brookline Booksmith and with advance ticket purchase.

About Milk Street Sessions

Milk Street Sessions bring our research, friends and influences to our home in Boston. These live events feature Christopher Kimball and special guests in conversation and cooking, and usually plotting a surprise or two for the audience. Expect a little hilarity and a lot fun.

About Senegal: Modern Senegalese Recipes from the Source to the Bowl

Senegal will transport you deep into the country’s rich, multifaceted cuisine. You’ll feel the sun at your back and the cool breeze off the Atlantic, hear the sizzle of freshly caught fish hitting the grill, and bask in the tropical palm forests of Casamance. Inspired by the depth of Senegalese cooking and the many people he’s met on his culinary journey, these recipes are Pierre Thiam’s own creative, modern takes on the traditional. Learn to cook the vibrant, diverse food of Senegal, such as soulful stews full of meat falling off the bone; healthy ancient grains and dark leafy greens with superfood properties; fresh seafood grilled over open flame, served with salsas singing of bright citrus and fiery peppers; and lots of fresh vegetables and salads bursting with West African flavors.

About Pierre Thiam

RAISED IN DAKAR, the bustling and culturally diverse West African metropolis, Thiam (pronounced CHEE-AM) steadily climbed up New York's culinary ladder to Chef de cuisine at Boom and Two Rooms before opening his own restaurants. Currently, Thiam is the Executive Chef at the celebrated Nok by Alara in Lagos, Nigeria.

Thiam is also the author of two groundbreaking cookbooks, his first, Yolele! Recipes from the Heart of Senegal, was a nominated finalist of the IACP Julia Child Cookbook Award and a Special Jury Award Winner at The Gourmand World Cookbook in Paris, France. His second book, SENEGAL: Modern Senegalese Recipes from the Source to the Bowl was a finalist for the James Beard award for Best International Cookbook.

A leading advocate for world hunger alleviation, responsible tourism as well as a spokesperson for the rich culinary history of Africa and its Diaspora, Thiam has been invited as a guest lecturer and guest chef across the globe to speak on these topics. His never-ending passion and excitement for African culinary traditions has led him to organize AfroEats in May 2013, the first African Food and Local Products Festival in Dakar in partnership with the Senegalese Ministry of Trade and Industry.
