Event description
It’s that time of the year! We’re celebrating Dominican Republic’s independence day in our very own #MiLittleDR.

About this Event

Join us and The Met Cloisters for a unique carnival mask workshop, learn about its symbolism and try a hand at finalizing a careta!

Participants will meet at the Pontaut Chapter House within The Met Cloisters to work collaboratively with Washington Heights born and raised, Dominican-American artist, Diego Espaillat to decorate a Lechón Mask from the city of Santiago, one of the widest known caricatures in the carnival for its large snout resembling that of a pig, menacingly large horns, and loud beating sound that the performer makes when beating the ground with its sisal whip.

The introductory mask production process will allow participants to comprehend the use of carnival masks as decorative and symbolic objects whilst creating a space for storytelling and sharing of Dominican culture and appreciation.

Workshops are limited to 8, RSVP strongly encouraged.

Please only RSVP and claim your spot ONLY if you are committed to attending as space is extremely limited. If event is sold out, please feel free to join us anyway!

This workshop will be followed by a Happy Hour for participants 21+ in Republica (160 Dyckman St, New York, NY 10040 where Washington Heights born and raised, Dominican-American poet, Destiny Corporan will perform a poetry reading.

In conjunction with the workshop, Wil Tejada a.k.a WilPower will lead a cultural + social run through Fort Tryon Park, ending at Republica where he will join us to celebrate Dominican Independence!
