When Sex Interferes with Service: An Introduction to Sex Addiction for Military Providers

The unique pressures of life in the military present additional challenges to services members beyond the everyday stressors that all people must contend with. Most providers are well versed and knowledgeable about the use of substance addictions to manage stress and trauma. However, behavioral addictive coping can often manifest more covertly and go unnoticed until consequences or life disruptions become dire. The goal of this presentation is to give providers some foundational knowledge around sex addiction, how to assess for it, and unique challenges that can complicate recovery the military population.
Learning Objectives:1. Participants will be able to describe the interpersonal neurobiology model of understanding sexual addiction.2. Participants will be able to list at least three different manifestations of sexually compulsive behaviors that can interfere with a client’s life.3. Participants will be able to list three tools they can use to assess a service member around issues with sexual behavior.
