Good-hearted, authentic people are in high demand these days, and you will meet two of them at our next performance, the husband and wife duo Mike + Ruthy (of The Mammals). Residents of New York’s Hudson Valley, parents of two children whom they tour with, poets, storytellers, devoted activists, singers and players of great skill and passion, Mike Merenda and Ruth Ungar are steeped in American music traditions that they bring into our modern times with heart, soul and joy.

Mike, on banjo, guitar and vocals, is a gifted songwriter; his recent song, Sunshiner, was nominated for an International Folk Music Award for Song of the Year. It is an ode to renewable energy which simultaneously honors the past and looks to the future with the sing-along lyric, “Yes my Daddy was a miner, but I’m gonna be a sunshiner.” Ruthy was raised in the Catskills, the daughter of legendary fiddler Jay Ungar, whose tune Ashokan Farewell graced the soundtrack of Ken Burns' Civil War documentary. Her voice is as versatile as they come; it can range from a capella balladry to earthy soul and country, and you will hear lots of influences in her fiddle playing, from rock to old-timey. Their music is moving, and a lot of fun. And if you’re ever in the Hudson Valley in late August or early February go to their music festival, The Hoot, at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, NY.

About their 2018 record Sunshiner, No Depression had this to say: "This is a record about what it is to be human. It's a record about what it is to have an inextricable allegiance to tradition, while feeling compelled to speak for oneself." And LA Weekly called it "some of the best songwriting of their generation.”
