Event description
A 3-hour workshop on Zoom about The Writing Life, on how to develop the pro mindset - taught by award-winning NYC journalist Mike Geffner

About this Event

"Don't take professional advice from amateurs."

Mike Geffner is a retired 30-year professional journalist who published thousands of stories in countless major publications, including USA Today, Details Magazine, The Sporting News, Cigar Aficionado, The Writer, NY Post's Page Six Magazine and The Village Voice. He interviewed everyone from former President Richard Nixon to Forest Whitaker to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Derek Jeter to Sandy Koufax to Dennis Hopper. His work won him several awards, including first place for profile writing by the Society of Professional Journalists, and he was acknowledged for excellence seven times by the annual anthology The Best American Sports Writing, published by Houghton Mifflin. He's been a private writing coach and workshop host for decades, and he is the founder of both The Inspired Word spoken word/poetry series (https://InspiredWordNYC.com, @InspiredWordNYC on all social media platforms) and the popular online writing discussion forum, blog and newsletter Mike's Writing Workshop, which ended in 2010. On August 26, he signed a deal to have one of his stories made into a feature film.

This workshop is NOT about craft. It is about MINDSET. It's also about unlocking inspiration and motivation and self discovery. But it's mostly about using solid next-level principles and winning strategies that will demystify the process of making that difficult crossover from amateur to professional.

Because what separates me from so many other writing workshop hosts is that I ACTUALLY made my living as a writer - and a high-level one at that. In my heyday, I earned as much as between $5-$10K PER STORY writing for national publications.

My goal now is to pass whatever knowledge, secrets and wisdom I have along to YOU. Mentoring is my passion. Teaching fills my soul. I'm hoping to take you as far as your talents will take you and help you reach your potential.

I lived my dreams. I want you to finally live yours.

This 3-hour Sunday afternoon session on Zoom, including a Q&A period, is geared to ALL types of writers looking to move up the ladder, improve marketing/promotion skills to build their brand, and better understand the industry.

You'll receive the ZOOM link and password for entrance 2 days before the event. Please show up PROMPTLY at 1pm and bring whatever you need to jot down information. Workshop will be LOCKED DOWN, forbidding entry, after 2pm.

"Mike Geffner is, simply put, one of the finest writers - and teachers of writing - in America." - award-winning national journalist/book author Bill Minutaglio (http://www.billminutaglio.com/)

"Mike Geffner has been a true mentor for more than three decades. His honesty, genuine caring and passion for the writing craft and the process has been a mainstay throughout my career. I often remember his words of sage advice, because they hold even more sway in our ever-changing media world. Telling good stories with grace and humility is never out of style. And Mike is clear proof that is how to be in this world." – journalist Allan Kreda (NY Times, Bloomberg)

“When he is mentoring, Mike Geffner truly listens to the writer’s hopes and dreams. That’s what he did for me 27 years ago. He quickly assessed my skill set, then put serious thought into where my career might take me. He advised me as I set my sights on a writing job in the fashion industry. He was the first one I called after getting a job at Women’s Wear Daily (a publication commonly called “the fashion bible”). On a granular level, Mike helped me fine tune my writing style. Best of all: Mike is, by nature, thoughtful, ethical and enthusiastic, and he backs up his natural mentoring skills up with years of experience at the top of the writing field.” - writer Karen Parr-Moody (Women's Wear Daily, People, InStyle, New York Magazine)

"With all the legendary writers at the Village Voice, I always sought Mike Geffner's articles first. They were in depth, funny and eye opening. You can tell Mike is a writer who loves what he does." - Award winning reporter and author Bob LeMoullec

"Mike Geffner is an exceptionally gifted and seasoned writer. Not only is he one of the best instructors in the business, but he also is intuitive in knowing how to best bring out your own writing talents. This master class is "A Must" if you want to invest in learning to write professionally." - entertainment entrepreneur Bernie Furshpan, President, Metropolitan Room NYC

"Mike Geffner's workshop was inspiring, informative, and honest. Any creative from any field should take this workshop — it's a lesson on the realities of the business, and provides helpful tips that can be used when trying to launch the next (or first!) phase of your career." - poet Rebecca E. Carvalho (https://www.rebeccaecarvalho.com/poetry)
