This is a hands-on small-group workshop with a focus on the technical skills needed to act as first assistant during cesarean. Of course, our first goal is preventing the cesarean. When a cesarean is recommended, participants will be able to counsel women about the procedure, and bring compassionate family-focused care to the surgical suite. Participants must read the ACNM text The Midwife as Surgical First Assistant (Tharpe, 2016) prior to attending this workshop. The workshop runs from 9-4 on Day One and 9-12 on Day Two. Registration and networking begins at 8:30 am.
Teaching methods include brief PowerPoint presentation, discussion of current literature, web resources, demonstration and practice of surgical skill development exercises, and an interactive surgical simulation using cesarean models. The workshop includes discussion, demonstration, simulation and self-evaluation.
Following this didactic and skills program participants are expected to independently arrange a structured clinical experience at a facility where they are credentialed to attain and document competency as a first assistant.
