Event description

Join us for our annual Spring Seminar! This year's seminar will feature two speakers, Ruth Ann Hager and Patti Hobbs.

About Ruth Ann Hager: Ruth Ann Abels Hager, CG, CGL , MAT is a researcher, volunteer, and speaker at local, state, and national levels. For sixteen years, Hager was a reference specialist in St. Louis County Library’s History and Genealogy Department. She also taught in the “Researching African American Ancestors” and “Research in the South” courses at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama. In 2006, Hager found new information regarding the death and burial of Harriet Scott, the wife of Dred Scott. Dred and his family were denied their freedom by the infamous Dred Scott U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1857. With the help and support of Scott descendants, Hager went on to research and write “Dred & Harriet Scott: Their Family Story,” published in 2010.

About Patti Hobbs: Patti Hobbs, Certified Genealogist® works as a part-time professional genealogist as well as occasionally in the Local History & Genealogy department at the Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield, Missouri. Patti instructs on the use and analysis of DNA testing and how it complements traditional research in original records. Patti teaches in the Practical Genetic Genealogy course at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh, and is the course coordinator for the Institute for Genealogy and Historical Research Institute course “Genetics for Genealogists: Beginning DNA” at Athens, Georgia. The Day's Agenda:

9:00am Check-in

9:30 AM

1.) Ruth Ann Hager: Finding the First Landowner Using Maps, Historygeo, & Texas Land Survey Maps

A search for the first landowner in twenty-nine Public Domain states and Texas is now easier. These three sources offer plat maps showing the exact location of each parcel of land acquired from either the U.S. federal government or the Texas granting authority, along with the date and name of the person receiving it. That information can provide clues about ancestors and their neighbors who might later become spouses.

10:30 AM Break

10:45 AM

2.) Ruth Ann Hager: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies and Navies in the Civil War

These two multi-volume sets provide transcriptions of Civil War documents telling about soldiers, sailors, and even civilians—both Union and Confederate. Written by commanding officers and others, those documents also tell about individual regiments, ships, battles, and places. What information might this tell about your Civil War ancestor?

Noon - Lunch Buffet is Served

1:15 PM

3.) Patti Hobbs: Autosomal DNA - Testing for All Genealogical Lines

Autosomal DNA testing is the most complex to analyze, but it is often the most useful because we inherit autosomal DNA from all of our ancestral lines. This session will instruct on understanding the test and the results as well as providing strategies for test subject recruitment.

2:15 PM Break

2:30 PM

4.) Patti Hobbs: Autosomal DNA - Working the Results

Many tools for analyzing autosomal DNA are available. This session will instruct on how these tools can advance the identification of common ancestors. However, genuine success in DNA testing requires correlation of the test results with quality genealogical scholarship. Examples will be presented.
