Event description

Description

The Minnesota Association for Environmental Education is proud to host the 2019 Midwest Environmental Education Conference:

Access Nature: Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Environmental Education

This year’s conference theme will explore barriers that prevent educators and learners from accessing natural areas and having valuable learning experiences in the outdoors. We will focus on ways to promote access to natural spaces for everyone, regardless of physical ability, race, gender identity, age, geography, access to transportation, or socioeconomic status.

Field trips, workshops, and breakout sessions will cover topics from climate change and conservation to ADA accessibility, program assessment, and reaching diverse audiences. Collect valuable resources and lesson plans for your teaching toolbox. Our schedule will include topics relevant to classroom teachers, outdoor educators, naturalists, and program administrators. Presenters and educators from across the region will come together to share ideas, problem-solve, and network. Join us to get inspired to help everyone access nature! For more information, please visit our website: http://meeconference.org/

Thursday, October 3: Field trips

Friday, October 4: Long-format workshops and an evening event featuring musician and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. There will also be nature-themed trivia with local comedian and writer Lauren Chesnut!

Saturday, October 5: Shorter breakout sessions on a wide variety of topics and keynote speaker, educator, and community builder Asha Shoffner.

Science Museum of MN

We selected our conference site, the Science Museum of Minnesota, with the theme of access in mind. The wheelchair accessible museum is located in a dense urban area with easy access via public transportation. The Mississippi River is just steps from the conference, providing just one of many opportunities for nature exploration, even in an urban center.
