About this Event

The Conococheague Institute is pleased to invite the public to a special 18th Century Open Grounds Day. This is a free event, where staff and volunteers will be inhabiting various outdoor areas of the Institute in various historical roles and we invite visitors to enjoy our site in a safe manner. While main building access will remain closed to the public, volunteers will be at accessible areas where socially-distanced interpretation will occur.

Educational demonstrations during the event include:

-Welsh Barren's Visitor Center: An 18th Century Tailoring demonstration will be led by volunteer Sean Considine. Sean will be leading volunteers in several clothing projects ranging from Woman's Boned Stays, to men's breeches, checking the fit on volunteers' clothes, and offering advice and tips to others.

-Negley Cabin: An open-hearth cooking demonstration led by volunteers Pat and Pippa Todd. Our Volunteers love to stay busy, so whether it's woodworking or stocking darning you're sure to see a glimpse of everyday history.

-Four Square German Garden: Gardening is never-ending, especially in this summer heat, so join our costumed volunteers in the Four Square Garden and learn about the cultivation techniques of the 18th Century. Perhaps you can lend a hand with watering or pulling up tenacious weeds.

Membership support is a major component of the Conococheague Institute, and CI Board Members will be manning the front porch of the Welsh Barrens Visitor Center to assist anyone looking to renew their membership or join up for the first time. A book sale of fascinating books will be available with titles ranging from Medieval History to Modern Day Theology and Survival Skills.

Standard COVID-19 Policies will apply. By staging all public activities outside, proper social distancing will allow maximum enjoyment and safety for all. If you cannot maintain a 6 ft distance from someone, please follow CDC and State Guidelines and wear a face mask.
