Event description

Description

The magnitude, frequency and impact of cyberattacks is increasing, affecting every aspect of life in the twenty-first century. Events such as the 2015 attack on the Ukrainian electric grid, the 2016 attacks on US water utilities, the recent WannaCry ransomware attack, and the Equifax breach clearly demonstrate the danger of such disruptive incidents and the importance of data security.

The crossroads of cybersecurity and data protection is a challenging environment of competing interests that organizations must navigate both for compliance and business success. Regulators on both sides have to thread the needle of ensuring good market outcomes while protecting consumers that are unaware of the dangers they face. In short, these crossroads can be a dark and foreboding place for all stakeholders.

One of the ways in which regulators and policy makers have responded to these threats to data is by increasing requirements around data protection and privacy. The EU's GDPR stands out as the most prominent example of a regulation that seeks to drive compliance by businesses in this area to a whole new level, giving a new meaning to this term - and consequently forcing businesses to change their approach to it. Other countries are developing their own approaches to these issues, complicating compliance for multinational companies.

In this event, cybersecurity and data protection experts will talk about what actors from every sector need to do to avoid and combat cyberattacks as well as to drive internal change to embrace new regimes and be compliant. We will also discuss what the UK´s strategy should be in order to be fully prepared to address increasingly sophisticated threats and raise awareness, and what its role should be in each of these interrelated areas.

This event is open to TLA members and anyone interested in cybersecurity, GDPR and wider data protection issues. It will be sponsored by Access Partnership – a global leader in technology public policy consultancy - and CyNation – an innovator in cybersecurity and data protection compliance solutions.
