CONTINUING EDUCATION OUTLINE

Title: “Optimizing Multidisciplinary Tooth Replacement Therapy by Leveraging on Digital Technologies”

Presenters: Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz & Dr. Christopher A. Barwacz

Course Topics & Objectives:

1. Importance of effective communication between members of the multidisciplinary team to optimize care and to minimize complications

2. Fundamental concepts for adequate management of the extraction site

3. Principles of digital guided implant surgery

4. Rationale for CAD/CAM custom abutments

5. Full digital protocols for immediate single tooth replacement in posterior segments

*Clinical Examples will be presented throughout the presentation to illustrate different concepts. Technical tips and emerging concepts in the context of tooth replacement therapy will also be discussed.

Title: “How to Implement Intraoral Scanning, Digital Implant Treatment Planning, and 3D Printed Surgical Guide Fabrication in your Surgical Practice”

Presenters: Dr. Gregory R. Caldwell

Course Topics & Objectives:

1. Fundamentals of intraoral scanning, digital implant surgical guide design and 3D Printing

2. How to implement 3D printing of surgical guides and models in your office

3. Provide a protocol for implant surgical guide design and fabrication of 3D printed surgical guides for dentate and edentulous cases

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz DDS, MS, PhD

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz is a tenured Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He completed his DDS and PhD training programs at the University of Granada, Spain, before moving to Ann Arbor (USA), where he attained his MS and certificate in Periodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Avila-Ortiz currently serves as department chair (DEO). He served as director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics between 2016 and 2018. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and currently maintains a faculty practice limited to Periodontics and Oral Implantology. Dr. Avila-Ortiz’s research spans a number of clinical topics, including the understanding of the influence of local and systemic individual patient factors on healing dynamics following periodontal therapy, as well as bone and soft tissue grafting, particularly in relation to therapeutic strategies for implant site development.

Christopher A. Barwacz, DDS, FAGD, FICD

Dr. Christopher Barwacz is an Associate Professor with dual appointments in the Department of Family Dentistry and the Craniofacial Clinical Research Program (CCRP) at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. Dr. Barwacz received his DDS degree from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. He obtained his AEGD Certificate from Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A&M Health Science Center, and subsequently completed an Implant Fellowship at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. Dr. Barwacz currently serves as the Implant Program Director in The Department of Family Dentistry. He is a Fellow in The Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow in The International College of Dentists, serves on the Academy of Osseointegration’s Fellowship & Certificate Steering Committee, and is a member of the International Association for Dental Research, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Barwacz has clinical translational research funding in oral implantology, specifically related to transmucosal factors that optimize implant prosthetic and mucosal outcomes. He maintains an interdisciplinary faculty intramural practice limited to restorative and implant dentistry at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics.

Gregory Caldwell DDS, MS

Dr. Gregory R. Caldwell is a second-generation periodontist. He currently in private practice with his father at Caldwell & Dimmitt Periodontics in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Caldwell received his DDS degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. He continued training at UTHSCSA in the Graduate Periodontics Program where he also obtained a Master of Science degree and Certificate in Periodontics. Dr. Caldwell completed his master’s thesis research on lateral ridge augmentation techniques and implant placement. Dr. Caldwell is board certified by the American Board of Periodontology. He is a Fellow and Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Caldwell has completed both the surgical and prosthetics courses at the Misch International Implant Institute. Dr. Caldwell is a contributing author in Misch's Avoiding Implant Complications in Oral Implantology textbook. Dr. Caldwell implements digital intraoral scanning, 3-D printing, and guided surgery in his periodontal practice on a daily basis.
