Let’s consider the literature of a particular age: that slippery time between childhood and adolescence that the publishing industry calls “middle grade” (most of us just call it growing up!) No longer picture books and not yet young adult novels, middle grade fiction is as slippery as the age range itself.

In this workshop we’ll look at Middle Grade voice, discuss what story ideas belong in the middle grade realm, and mine our childhoods for subject matter. We will also touch on the difference between the small-but-important separations the industry imposes within the age range so that you can consider where along that spectrum your story lies. And in the last hour, we’ll experience a splash of inspiration.

No matter what your chronological age, your writer-self can speak from the point of view of a child. Why? We all hold deep inside ourselves the knowledge of every age we have ever been—and that includes ages 8-12!
