Tattoo Inks: A Regulatory Perspective with Dr. Prashiela Manga, Deputy Director Office of Cosmetics and Colors, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, FDA
Presentation Abstract:
The popularity of tattoos and permanent makeup has increased significantly over the past several decades, both in the United States and globally. The process of tattooing involves injecting inks containing various pigments through the epidermis into the dermis of the skin. Globally, the safety of tattoo inks has been a subject of intense interest and has prompted the consideration of regulatory requirements for both the inks and their pigment components. Development of analytical methods to determine the composition of the many types of tattoo inks available on the global marketplace has been challenging. Some of the considerations on both the regulatory and analytical fronts will be addressed.
After learning about tattoo ink, join us as we venture to the US Botanic Gardens for our after presentation activity. Admission to the U.S. Botanic Garden is free. No tickets required.
