Microsoft Excel Interactive Workshop
Overview
Hosted by the VIU Business Students’ Association (BSA), this engaging and interactive Introductory Microsoft Excel Workshop features Ken Puls, CPA, FCMA, President of Excelguru Consulting Inc., and one of Canada’s top Excel and Power BI experts.
Designed especially for accounting and finance students, this workshop offers a hands-on learning experience where participants are encouraged to bring their preferred devices (laptop or tablet) and follow along in Microsoft Excel throughout the session. Ken will guide attendees step-by-step through practical exercises designed to strengthen both foundational and professional-level Excel skills.
Students will master core skills such as cell references (relative and absolute), formatting, sorting, filtering, and table creation, while diving into essential formulas like SUM/AVERAGE, MIN/MAX, COUNT/COUNTA/COUNTIF(S), IF/IFS, AND/OR, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, TEXT (LEFT/RIGHT/MID), and DATE functions.
Real-world accounting applications will take center stage, including creating quick financial statements, running totals, data validation, and performing error checks, all capped off with an introduction to basic charts and PivotTables. The workshop places a strong emphasis on financial statement preparation, equipping students with skills directly relevant to coursework, internships, and future careers in business and finance.
