ABOUT THIS CLASS

Program your own micro music machine with Raspberry Pi! In this introductory course, students will learn to create musical programs in Pure Data and execute them on a Raspberry Pi microcomputer. Pure Data (PD) is an open-source visual programming language for sound and multimedia (very similar to Max) and it runs on the Raspberry Pi! With PD on the Pi, you no longer need to run your interactive artworks and sound performances off of a laptop or a desktop which is very expensive and prone to crashing. Because the Pi is the size of a credit card, you can also embed it into a custom project. The PD environment easily integrates with the Arduino microcontroller so you can include a custom analog hardware interface with knobs, buttons, and sensors along with your Pi.

In this course, students will all be running their Raspberry Pi computers off of a preloaded Raspian OS disk image optimized for creating standalone projects with PD. You will be up and running within one hour or less.

Over the course of seven classes, we will cover how to pass values between software, integrate analog controls and sensors to modulate sounds and trigger events, explore ways to generate and manipulate sounds, and control output devices like servos and LEDs. Through all of these class experiments, you will discover possibilities for a final project to be featured at the dadageek student showcase, as well as many future projects to come!


WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR

This course is for artists and musicians interested in learning how to program sound on an embedded processor for performances and installations. It is also for those who are interested in learning about the Raspberry Pi, Linux, and Pure Data.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Visual programming with Pure Data

  • Processing sounds within the Supercollider sound programming environment
  • Programming with Python
  • Soldering basics
  • Electronic circuit design basics
  • Sound synthesis and digital sound processing
  • Integrating sensors with the Pi’s GPIO and Arduino Nano


REQUIREMENTS
  • An interest in programming and music/sound
  • No electronics experience required
  • No programming experience required

Students must bring:

  • Laptop (Mac or Windows) with an ethernet port or an adapter for an ethernet port
  • Micro USB Cable
  • Mini USB Cable

  • Custom Firmata Interface PCB
  • Arduino Nano
  • LEDs, Sensors, and Misc Components


MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Matthew Steinke is a practicing artist working with video animation, interactive programming, and homemade electronics. Over the past twenty years, he has exhibited and performed with his robotic musical inventions throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. He holds an MFA in Art and Technology Studies from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been featured in Wired, Artweek LA, The Village Voice, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Hackaday, and on the cover of Tape Op.
