Perhaps Chicago's greatest secret treasure is its soul. As in Soul Music. Overshadowed by blues, jazz, and, in recent years, rock, Chicago soul music wrote several chapters in the histories of soul, rhythm and blues, doo-wop, and pop.
Michigan Avenue Serenade will feature clubs where the magic happened, studios and labels where that magic was nurtured and captured on vinyl, and the ghosts of music past coming alive to celebrate their influence on the present.
From the chamber halls of Seward Park to the walls of 2120 S. Michigan Ave., we explore the street corners where the music was created and woodshedded and the classic landmarks that put faces on names and sounds. This is history you can dance to.
Have you ever asked "Have You Seen Her?" Have you ever warned a prospective lover "He Will Break Your Heart"? Have you grooved to Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Major Lance, The Impressions, Gene Chandler, The Chi-Lites, Tyrone Davis, Otis Clay or Jerry Butler? While shaking a tail feather doing The Roach, The Monkey, The Twine, or The Bus Stop?
Whether you can or cannot tell the difference between Superfly and the Duke of Earl, it's time to take a trip down the corridors of one of Chicago's most influential, yet underrated musical styles.
Musician and critic James Porter shares it all, along with a soundtrack of classic soul that you may not even know originated in Chicago. As James puts it, "Any town that gave the world Soul Train has definitely got a good thing going on."
The tour begins & ends at the Bus Stop at Rockit Bar & Grill. Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour begins. The bus cannot wait for late arrivals.
