Description

'Michael Longley in Context' is a celebration and critical appraisal of the poetry of Michael Longley in his 80th year. Registration is free and all events will take place in the Canada Room at Queen's University Belfast unless otherwise noted. A sandwich lunch will be provided with plenty of vegetarian options. If you have any other dietary requirements, please contact the organisers. Bursaries are available for PhDs/ECRs; please contact the organisers for more information.

9.00-9.30am: Registration, coffee and welcome

9.30 - 11.00am: Panel 1 chaired by Fran Brearton.

Florence Impens (University of Manchester): ‘The Interconnectedness of All Things: Michael Longley's Classical Poems';

Peter McDonald (University of Oxford): 'Michael Longley: "The Linen Industry"'.

11.00-11.15am: Coffee break

11.15am-1.15pm: Panel 2 chaired by Stephen Sexton

Lucy McDiarmid (Montclair State University): ‘Longley Reclining’;

Jack Quin (Trinity College Dublin): ‘Longley, the visual arts and the Arts Council’;

Adam Hanna (University College Cork): ‘On Carrigskeewaun'.

1.15-2.00pm: Lunch

2.00-3.30pm: Panel 3 chaired by Tara McEvoy

Maria Johnston (Independent Scholar): ‘Longley’s Angels: Michael Longley’s American Women Poets’;

Alan Gillis (University of Edinburgh): ‘Michael Longley and the Poetics of “Flora”’.

6pm: Wine reception and poetry reading in the Naughton Gallery: Peter McDonald, Alan Gillis, Leontia Flynn and Gail McConnell chaired by Seán Hewitt.
