Event Details

The Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County will host a two-day prevention conference at the Franciscan Center on the Lourdes University campus in Sylvania, Ohio. The conference will be held on November 30th and December 1st. Day one of the conference will include workshops, a keynote, lunch speaker, an interactive roundtable discussion and professional self-care. The sessions will focus on AOD, suicide prevention, problem gambling prevention and mental health promotion. Day two will offer the option of full-day trainings in Mental Health First Aid for youth, prevention ethics, the credentialing process and evidence-based prevention. CEU's pending.


Day 1 Options:

  • Fighting Heroin: What Can I Do?

The use of heroin and other opiates is a public health crisis in Ohio. People are overdosing at alarming rates in Lucas County. This workshop provides an overview of a three-year collaboration between the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County and two community behavioral health agencies to address the heroin/opiate epidemic.

 

  • Gambling is a Choice: Odds are...

Participants will: explore how gambling became a social norm; compare prevalence rates before and after Ohio casinos and racinos opened; learn what populations are risk; and understand prevention messages.

 

  • Ohio Suicide Prevention: What Role Can You Play?

Participants will learn: up-to-date statistics on suicide in Ohio; which groups are at high risk for experiencing suicide; and evidence based resources they can use to help prevent suicide through culturally inclusive messages.

 

  • Prevention in the Age of Medical Marijuana

Participants will: know and understand Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Law; learn about areas for concern in one’s community; and explore options to increase protective factors for youth and community.

 

Day 2 Options:

  • Ethics in Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Prevention

This course is designed for the alcohol and other drug prevention professional. Participants will be able to identify standards of conduct for prevention professionals, utilize a method of decision-making for difficult ethical decisions in prevention, and set professional goals with the prevention ethical standards in mind.

 

  • Evidence-Based Prevention

Participants will be able to: understand the contemporary approaches of evidence based prevention, theory to application; identify the current evidence-based prevention approaches that are showing promise with individuals and communities and provide opportunities for community engagement; and understand the importance of community coalitions in evidence-based prevention planning and community engagement.

 

  • Step Up Your Game: Become an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist

Participants will: demonstrate understanding of the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board’s Certified Prevention Specialist/Consultant requirements; and obtain and compile resources within the science of prevention.

 

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid

The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

  • Each participant must register individually
  • There is no charge for participants that work in Lucas County
  • If you are a participant  that does not work in Lucas County, the charge is $40 per day or $65 for both days
