The Big Let Down

                                                                V. Kuroji Patrick book
Please join us for our 23rd  Annual Breastfeeding Education Conference - back again at the wonderful Anthony's Pier 9 in New Windsor.

This year's conference is the third in our series of understanding how important the "Village" is in helping to protect, promote and support breastfeeding in our local communities, and examining how we can address what changes need to be made to remove the barriers that breastfeeding mothers and families face in our current social, commercial and medical system climate.

One component of this year's conference is about reaching the fathers, and we are pleased to bring you the expertise of Mr. V. Kuroji Patrick, Author/Illustrator of the children’s book, "This Milk Tastes Good!" about breastfeeding, which features an African American family. In February of 2013, Kuroji was awarded the Liberated Muses' 'heART' award, an award that recognizes a member of the community who has used their creative talents to uplift the community while supporting the transformation of spaces into art places. In August 2013 he was also inducted into the Medela Breastfeeding Hall of Excellence as Community Breastfeeding. In November of 2013 Kuroji illustrated and co-published the children's book, 'I Won't Eat That!'

Our featured presenter is Kimberly Seals Allers, BA, MS, who has been traveling across the country sharing her thoughts from her latest publication, The Big LetDown: How Big Business, Medicine and Feminism Undermine Breastfeeding.  Ms. Seals Allers is an award-winning journalist and a leading commentator, speaker and consultant on breastfeeding issues, with an expertise in African American women and racial disparities in breastfeeding.  Kimberly has designed and developed stratetic messaging campaigns and exploratory community-based projects examining the role of 'community' in breastfeeding success, and pioneered the concept of "first food deserts" and "First Food Friendly" communities. She will be available to sign copies of her latest book during the conference!

Dr. Susan Vierzchalek, IBCLC, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics for NYU Medical Center, and has served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the New York Statewide Breastfeeding Coalition for several years. She was instrumental in coordinating efforts across New York State to help promote and support the NYS Paid Family Leave Law, as it is a significant step forward to help mothers increase their breastfeeding duration. Dr. Vierzchalek will share details of the new law, as well as ways that we can help inform our community members about the changes to be implemented.

You will leave with new ideas and information to help you in your work to promote and support breastfeeding, no matter where you work.

An application for CERPs has been submitted to IBCLE.

If you are interested in having an exhibit table at the conference, please email Stephanie Sosnowski at for an application. Or visit the online application at:
