MHCGM: "Calm" Training ( Counseling on Access to Lethal Means)

MHCGM Conference Room | 5 Blodget Street | Manchester, NH 03102
Friday, September 20, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM (EDT)

Description: Objectives: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24 in New Hampshire and the tenth cause of death for those of all ages. We know that many attempters are as ambivalent about suicide as they are about life. One piece of that puzzle that has proven to be effective is to reduce access to lethal means – particularly firearms and medications. This workshop addresses why and how to do this. The workshop includes: PowerPoint presentations regarding why CALM is important, a model videotaped counseling session, plus time for discussion and role plays. CALM is recognized on the SPRC/AFSP Best Practice Registry, Section III. 1. Describe the association between access to lethal means and suicide and the contribution reducing access has for preventing suicide. 2. Develop skills to explain to a family that they or a family member is at risk for suicide and why you have made this determination 3. Show skills to assure people that they can reduce the risk by reducing access to lethal means. 4. Develop ways to discuss specific steps that they can take to remove or at least reduce access to firearms, medications and other lethal means. Contact Hours:  The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Northeast MultiState Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The participant will be awarded 3.0 contact hours for attending this program.  Category I Continuing Education – 3.0 Credits for relicensure by the NH-NASW, Workshop # 3191 Sponsor: The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester, Manchester, NH

FAQs for sponsored trainings

What is this application process for?

Network4Health is pleased to purchase seats for particular events. We generally sponsor a limited number of seats, and this process allows us to track who is interested in attending so that we are able to accurately know whom we are paying for.

Does Network4Health reserve seats at these trainings?

Generally no, we don't. Instead, Network4Health will pay a training vendor per attendee after the training is over.

Once I fill out this form, does that mean I am registered for the event?

No. This is only the first step so Network4Health knows you are interested in registering for the event itself.

How do I register for the event itself?

Each event is different. Once an individual has completed this registration process, an automatic email with specific instructions on how to register for the actual event will be sent out to the email address given to us. Our staff will ensure that all those that complete the form are given the chance to register for the given event.

Will I have to pay upfront and get reimbursed later?

No. Once you have completed this registration step, you will be sent an email with specific instructions on how to register for the event itself. This may include certain steps to take to indicate Network4Health will be paying for your registration fee.

I tried to register but the event is at capacity. I thought I was guaranteed a seat?

Unfortunately Network4Health is not guaranteeing seats at trainings. We recommend that you still complete this process and register with the vendor to get on their waitlist.

What happens if I can’t attend the training after I’ve registered?

In an effort to maximize grant funds, we ask that our registrants make every effort to attend all or part of the training they registered for. If you find that you need to cancel your registration, please notify Geoff Vercauteren, Director of Workforce Development for Network4Health, at geoffrey.vercauteren@cmc-nh.org as soon as possible. It would be helpful if you have identified another staff member to go in your place.
