Description

Come join us for Meyhane Series #1 – Rakı & Meze night by Levantine Food Co.!

Raki is a cultural bond that describes our heritage in many ways. There are well-established customs around drinking raki, whether at a Meyhane (Mey- wine in Persian and Hane-house) or at home. It revolves around drinking raki one-sip at a time, over one-bite at a time mezes over a few hours at a slow pace, and always with company and conversation of friends.

We love good food and we love raki even more. Unfortunately, there is not a single decent Turkish restaurant in the bay area to have raki and meze. We wanted to solve this problem in a delicious way through a series of events we call Meyhane Series.

This is our inaugural event of our Meyhane Series. In our upcoming events, we plan to have various specialty themes. We are already planning three more in this series; Bosphorus Fish Restaurant (anchovies, red mullet, branzino, bonito, mussels), Kebap (Antep, Urfa, Maras and Antakya – basically the old municipalities of City of Aleppo), Aegean (Agean greens, olive oil dishes, fish).

We will serve Green Efe rakı (Turkish grape & anise brandy) to complement our delicious mezes.

We will be serving classic meze dishes along with specialties from Antakya, a southeastern city in Turkey renowned for its cuisine. Our chef for the event, Ömer is from Antakya, Turkey. He has been cooking his awesome food for the last twenty years to his friends and sometimes at events like this.

Our philosophy in recipes, ingredients and techniques is quite unique. Our thesis is that the hardest recipes to execute are the simplest one that is eaten most often and made by artisans. This is completely the opposite of what most chefs choose as direction, as they try to innovate their own dishes and try new recipes. Our approach is to replicate the best flatbread, kebap, simply grilled fish, or perfect the meze recipes that are most common. The perfection of well-known simple recipes require a zen-like focus on extreme details, replication of ingredients that come from terroir, small but important details that is not usually captured in recipe formulas that truly differentiate average from perfect. What we get more impressed with is not the three star Michelin restaurant that uses complex techniques and innovation, but the street vendor that has perfected a single rice dish over 30 years, or the hole-in-the-wall artisans that has perfected a few recipes over repetition and almost spiritual execution.

You will find many ingredients on the menu to be hand made by us, pastirma (cured beef), soujouk (cured beef sausage links), sosico (makanek), lakerda (salt-cured bonito), halloumi cheese, feta cheese, yogurt, goat cheese even the phyllo dough. This is a reflection of our focus on perfection and respect for ingredient, which production gives us not only control but also the fundamental understanding of the core aspects of an ingredient.

Special thanks to La Honda Winery letting us use the venue for this event. Since this is our first event, we might have minor setbacks and we apologize for these in advance.
