Mexico: Navigating Through a Time of Change

Join our panel of experts for a lively discussion of Mexico's struggles and challenges during a time of profound change on  political, economic, environmental and sociocultural fronts, with a special look at these issues in the context of the San Diego-Tijuana border region. Presentations and discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Biographies

William Ostick is U.S. Consul General in Tijuana, with jurisdiction over the Baja California peninsula. A career Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State, he assumed his duties in Tijuana in 2015. Mr. Ostick’s many other positions have included director for the Office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, information officer at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, public affairs officer and information officer in Panama, country desk officer for Argentina, and desk officer for public diplomacy for Brazil and the Southern Cone.  He also served in Niamey, Niger, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

Emily Edmonds-Poli, Ph.D., is an associate professor of political science and international relations at the University of San Diego. She focuses on Mexico and Latin America, with areas of interest that include politics, democratization, decentralization and violence against the press. Dr. Edmonds-Poli is the author, with David A. Shirk, of “Contemporary Mexican Politics.”

Enrique Morones, an internationally known human rights activist, is founder of Border Angels, a San Diego-based organization that focuses on migrant rights, immigration reform and the prevention of immigrant deaths. Mr. Morones has been featured on NBC, CNN, CBS, BBC and many other major news outlets. He was the first president of the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was vice president of Latino marketing for the San Diego Padres. In 1998, Mr. Morones became the first person to be granted dual citizenship with Mexico.

Rick Van Schoik is portfolio director of North American Research Partnership (NARP), an independent, nonprofit think tank that conducts applied research and outreach on how regions and communities in the United States, Mexico and Canada can better position themselves for success in the 21st century. NARP works on a broad range of international policy topics with an emphasis on cross-border trade and economic development. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Mr. Van Schoik was a Navy SEAL.
