Event description
MACNJ 2019 Convention hopes to give social and political agency to Mexican Americans on their path to empowerment within the state of NJ!!

About this Event

LAZOS América Unida would like to invite members of the Mexican community and interested parties who want to learn more about the Mexican population in New Jersey to the second Binational Mexican American Summit of New Jersey (BMASNJ). The panelists will include researchers, a representative of the Mexican government, and a representative of the State of NJ with expertise in the issues of immigration, health, identity, and education.

The 2010 U.S. Census illustrates that the Mexican are the third largest foreign-born population in New Jersey and third largest Latino sub-group. The Mexican population has more than doubled since 2000 from 103,000 to an astonishing 240,000. Although Mexican Americans are among the largest immigrant group in New Jersey, the growth in numbers does not translate into social, educational, and political incorporation. Only a small percent of Mexicans have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree or higher and higher percent have less than a High School Diploma or equivalency. Given these disparaging statistics, BMASNJ will render four cohorts of expert panels addressing current research and policy in health, immigration, identity, and education.

We will have various excellent speakers, guests, and moderators such as Dr. Isabel Nazario RU Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Dr. T'Karima Ticitl, Dr. Karen D'Alonso, Dr. Ben Sinfuentes Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Alana Vega of Advocates for children of NJ, Cristian Moreno Chairman of the Aztec Mexican Organization, Itamary Vivar Middlesex County Colege, Professor Nelson-Maldonado Torres, Yolanda Moncada, Professor Raul Fregoso Olmo, Rosa Zambrano Mexican American Alliance of NJ,Teresa Vivar Executive director of Lazos America Unida, Professor Carolina Alonso, Javier Enriquez, Andrea Martinez Mejia from the NJ department of Health, Quetziquel Jaramillo, and many more!
