Event description

Description

Movements to end the cycle of systemic violence against women often exclude or are dismissive women and girls, and LGBTQI+ people who have survived abuse and assault within systems of criminalization and incarceration. Through this symposium, we will promote awareness of the severe systemic impact that current social policies have within the culture of punishment as justice, encourage discussions that inspire solutions, and we will attempt to mitigate the effects of violence and sexual violence to women and girls and LGBTQI+ people who are currently and formerly incarcerated.

Our strategic vision is to be united in and committed to the transformation of policies and practices that create and normalize sexual violence against women and girls and members of the LGBTQI+ community. To achieve that desired future, our goals are to:

• Create awareness of the current culture and policies that cause and normalize sexual violence • Help begin a process that assists in creating connections among people and partners

• Help impacted people better understand the legal aspects and social constructs of systemic sexual violence

• Seek dialog within our various communities in order to foster love and justice for and among all people This intense, energetic process of dialogue and decision-making is for the purpose of shaping a narrative as a response to sexual violence, to build trust among participants, and to bring clarity to what we do together in response. 2. PANELS: Rape Culture (within the carceral system) Gender Identiy+ (particularly issues faced by trans and nonbinary people) Transformative Justice (community accountability, breaking cycles of harm inflicted by/within the system) Legal (rights and options in taking legal action in response to assault.
