Event description

Description

Methodist College is hosting a unique community service camp for Middle Schoolers this summer. The camp features upper level Methodist College Nursing students as the camp leaders who will design the curriculum and deliver it to the Middle Schooler Campers. Practical learning experiences in health care and healthy living are taught in the morning and real-life service projects in community organizations are conducted in the afternoon.

The service projects are directly related to the morning learning experience. More importantly, Middle Schoolers serve their community along-side their college student counterparts. Each day of the camp features a learning component and a service component. For example, the Nursing students will teach the Middle Schoolers about nutrition and healthy living and then volunteer at the Midwest Food Bank. On another day, the Middle Schoolers will learn about aging and caring for others in need and make fleece-tie-blankets. That afternoon, they go to Heddington Oaks to interact with the residents (paint nails, play games) and distribute the blankets.
