Event Times:

There are two sessions of this class that will happen from 2 - 4 pm on 2 concurrent Saturdays.

Session 1: Saturday, 08/04/2018, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Session 2: Saturday, 08/11/2018, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Course Description:

Metalworking 102 covers the larger, more useful, and more difficult to operate equipment in the metal shop. We’ll cover the safe and effective use of:

  • Vertical bandsaw
  • Large belt grinder
  • Uni-Hydro Iron Worker
  • Scotchman cold saw
  • Sheet metal brake and foot shear
  • Production jigging

Session 1 will have formal training from the instructor for 2 hours. Your teacher will demonstrate safe and successful usage of each tool, describe and demonstrate best practices, and inform the class of unsafe/undesirable outcomes. Each student will have hands-on time with each tool under supervision.

Session 2 will consist of completing the tool trainings, and student evaluation. Students will be evaulated on safe operation of the equipment and tested and checked off to use the equipment by the instructor.

Grinding and Welding in the Shop

Class Goals:

In this class students will learn safe and effective usage of the above tools.


Beginner/Intermediate - Students should have completed Metalworking 101 Tool Training (or its equivalent).

Students may enroll in 101 concurrently with this class.

What to Bring:

All Materials are included and provided.

Required Dress Code:

  • Cotton clothing that you don't mind getting dirty (synthetics burn and melt)
  • Long sleeves and pants
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Something to cover your hair: baseball cap and bandanas work well

Class Minimum:

Class will be cancelled if fewer than 3 students are registered, sign up early and bring a friend!

Ticket sales end the day before class: shop accordingly!


Brendan McGuirl has been a flour miller, landscaper, stone fabricator, mechanic, welder, graduate student, construction project manager, and demolition derby champion. He presently splits his time between managing multi-million dollar construction projects, restoring antique cars, and making world-class pie crust.
