Event Times:

Session 1: Saturday, 7/8/17, 3-5pm

  • Formal training from the instructor who will demonstrate safe and successful usage of each tool, describe and demonstrate best practices, and informs class of unsafe/undesirable outcomes. Each student will have hands-on time with each tool under supervision.

Session 2: Saturday, 7/15/17, 3-5pm

  • One week following Session 1:Testing/Evaluation - students will be tested and checked off with supervision from the instructor - students have the option to stay later in order to participate in peer review and interact with the 102 session students.

Course Description:

The bare minimum to get started in the Asylum's metal shop.

Learn how to pick the right saw for the job, how to drill holes, and how to grind the burrs down. A quick introduction to the staples of metalworking and the perfect warm-up to welding. You’ll learn how and when to use:

  • Abrasive saw VS. Horizontal Band
  • Pedestal VS. Angle Grinder
  • Hand VS. Drill Press
  • Safe Workholding and creation and use of Jigs


Grinding and Welding in the Shop

Class Goals:

In this class students will learn safe and effective usage of the above tools.

Prerequisites:

No experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old.

What to Bring:

All Materials are included and provided.

Required Dress Code:

  • Cotton clothing that you don't mind getting dirty - (synthetics burn and melt)
  • Long sleeves and pants
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Something to cover your hair: baseball cap and bandanas work well

Class Minimum:

Class will be cancelled if fewer than 3 students are registered, sign up early and bring a friend!

Ticket sales end the day before class: please shop accordingly!
