Event Times:

This is a 2 session class happening on 2 consecutive Saturdays from 12 - 2 PM.

Session 1: Saturday, 1/06/2018, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Session 2: Saturday, 1/13/2018, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Course Description:

The bare minimum to get started in the Asylum's metal shop.

Session 1 will cover:

  • Formal training from the instructor who will demonstrate safe and successful usage of each tool, describe and demonstrate best practices, and inform class of unsafe/undesirable outcomes. Each student will have hands-on time with each tool under supervision.

Session 2 will cover:

  • Evaluation - students will be tested and checked off with supervision from the instructor - students have the option to stay later in order to participate in peer review and interact with the 102 session students.

Learn how to pick the right saw for the job, how to drill holes, and how to grind the burrs down. A quick introduction to the staples of metalworking and the perfect warm-up to welding. This class covers safety requirements, operation, and adjustment of the following tools:

  • Abrasive Cut-off Saw
  • Horizontal Bandsaw
  • Pedestal Bench Grinder
  • Angle Grinder
  • Drill Press
  • Safe Workholding and Welding table operation

Grinding and Welding in the Shop

Class Goals:

In this class, students will learn safe and effective usage of the above tools.

Prerequisites:

No experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old.

What to Bring:

All Materials are included and provided.

Required Dress Code:

  • Cotton clothing that you don't mind getting dirty - (synthetics burn and melt)
  • Long sleeves and pants
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Something to cover your hair: baseball cap and bandanas work well

Class Minimum:

Class will be cancelled if fewer than 3 students are registered, sign up early and bring a friend!

Ticket sales end the day before class: please shop accordingly!

Instructor

Brendan McGuirl has been a flour miller, landscaper, stone fabricator, mechanic, welder, graduate student, construction project manager, and demolition derby champion. He presently splits his time between managing multi-million dollar construction projects, restoring antique cars, and making world-class pie crust.
