Metal Art by Cherie
MIX is excited to host the work of Ann Arbor based artist Cherie Haney for our December exhibit. Under the studio name "Metal Art By Cherie", she has created a collection for this show of aluminum and mixed media wall art inspired by several artists, including the arial landscape photography of Emmet Gowins "Changing Earth Series 1987-2012". Cherie builds mixed media backgrounds for her wall sculptures inspired by Gowins with earthy leather, patina on copper, stencil painted aluminum and sgraffito - a technique of scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color. Cut aluminum forms inspired by grafitti and the environmental work of Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser hover over the mixed media background.
Cherie's Aluminum wall tiles have an intimate interaction between shape, shadow and reflective surface. The use of positive and negative shapes within the intricately cut designs cast alluring shadows that interact with the piece itself. An interest in vintage medical illustrations and industrial decay have affected the work for this exhibit, allowing the artist to assemble a collection of metal and mixed media wall tiles that are both abstracted and inviting.
