Meridian Health Services is hosting the Meridian Community Health Speaker Series—Community, Commitment, Collaboration—featuring award-winning author, Sam Quinones.

Quinones, a journalist, storyteller, former LA Times reporter, and author of three acclaimed books of narrative nonfiction is the author of Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic by Bloomsbury Press, will be speaking at Johnson Hall at Ivy Tech Richmond on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 11am-1pm. A complimentary luncheon will be provided by Meridian Health Services.

Quinones' career as a journalist has spanned almost 30 years. Living for ten years as a freelance writer in Mexico, where he wrote his first two books. He returned to the United States in 2004 to work for the L.A. Times, covering immigration, drug trafficking, neighborhood stories, and gangs. In 2014, Quinones resigned from the paper to return to freelance writing, working for National Geographic, Pacific Standard Magazine, the New York Times, Los Angeles Magazine, among other publications.

Quinones grew up in Claremont, California, and attended U.C. Berkeley, where he studied economics and American history.

A discussion panel comprised of community health leaders and officials will follow Quinones' presentation to engage the audience discussing issues related to drug addiction, the opioid epidemic, and measures being taken locally to overcome it.
