Event description

Description

Want to do something meaningful this Merdeka? This Merdeka Day, KelipKelip would like to celebrate our freedom by screening two amazing local films, SEPET and REDHA, to connect you with like-minded people, to initiate conversations that matter in our local community, and to keep the Malaysian dream alive!

REDHA (2016), 30 August, 115mins. Highlighting a hushed topic in Malaysia, Redha (English: Beautiful Pain) tells the story of a couple's challenging but rewarding journey in raising a child with autism. Any child is a gift from God -- how do we as parents and members of the society cater to God's children that come in different shapes, sizes... and abilities?

SEPET (2005), 31 August, 104mins. Released an unbelievable 12 years ago, Sepet was *the* film which turned many Malaysians into lifelong Yasmin Ahmad fans. It tells a love story between a Chinese DVD seller Jason and a sassy Malay girl, Orked. This interracial romance gave us a vision of a Malaysia in which the barriers of race and religion could be surmounted. However, how has Malaysia changed since then? Can Sepet still teach and inspire us on how to break barriers today?

Grab a seat now to join the Merdeka experience with KelipKelip and friends. Even if you have already watched the film, there’s plenty of reason to come watch it again with us!

After each screening session, we will hold a panel discussion with filmmakers and activists, and a Blank Canvas session to connect you with the right people to make a difference. During a Blank Canvas session, the limelight shifts from the stage to the floor where the audience suggests topics for discussion. Anyone can join any discussion group that interests them!

While both films makers are important cultural landmarks for the Malaysian film and society, many of Yasmin Ahmad's works did not do as well as Sepet, whereas Tunku Mona was not able to recoup production cost from the theatrical release, which in turn was financed by a loan. As Malaysians, we believe we can do better to sustain worthy local creative works. The price of your tickets goes not only into venue rental and overheads for the team, but also into supporting Tunku Mona and the Yasmin Ahmad Museum.
