This presentation is part of our special series and we are very excited to have Dr. Zul Merali as our speaker .

Mental health problems are much more common than what most us of think. Consider, that in any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health problem and that by the time Canadians reach the age of 40, 1 in 2 will have experienced a mental health problem.

The stigma associated with mental illness is common within families, self, and the workplace. Many factors contribute to mental illness. Diagnosis is based on symptoms and treatment can come in many forms. Dr. Merali’s webinar sheds light on many aspects of mental ill health and comes at an important time as we all grapple with the unwanted consequences of the pandemic.

Dr. Merali is a professor emeritus at the faculties of medicine and social sciences, University of Ottawa;

He recently retired as the long standing President & CEO of Ottawa's Royal's Institute of Mental Health Research. One of his many outstanding achievements there, was the establishment of a world-unique brain-imaging centre, dedicated to mental health research.

Dr. Merali is one of the key founders of the Canadian Depression Research and Intervention Network. He established a network of Depression Research Hubs across Canada and developed partnerships with the U.S. National Network of Depression Centres and the European Alliance Against Depression. He has recently taken on an assignment as the Founding Director of the newly minted Brain and Mind Institute - the first of its kind across Asia and East Africa.

Dr. Merali holds a doctorate in Pharmacology from the University of Ottawa and a certificate of Professional Development from The Wharton School, Pennsylvania. He has published over 200 scientific papers.
