Event description

Description

The purpose of this project is to, through partnership with Arkansas Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Center, the Medical Reserve Corps, the Arkansas Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), Suicide Prevention Allies, and the Arkansas Department of Education, create a new Medical Health Reserve Corps (MHRC) volunteer group that will be trained to respond to Arkansan’s mental health needs following a traumatic event at a school or within a community.

In essence, our goal is to support Arkansans’ mental health needs after a tragedy and to create standard training throughout the state in this regard.

Examples of traumatic events could be, but not limited to: school suicides, school shootings, youth suicides in a community, natural disasters, sports related deaths, etc. The Medical Reserve Corp team will be named the Mental Health Reserve Corp, and each will be regionally based around the 13 community mental health regions around Arkansas.

Benefits to the Community

Bolsters public health and emergency response infrastructures by providing supplemental personnel

Enables communities to meet specific health needs

Allows the local community more autonomy-not as reliant on state and national resources

Gives community members the opportunity to participate in developing strategies to make their communities healthier and safer

Provides a dialogue between emergency management and public health agencies with the public

Allows for national recognition of local public health and emergency response efforts

Provides mechanisms for information sharing and coordination between all partner organizations

Volunteers will be trained in a state standard program to include postvention, trauma-informed care, grief, and peer to peer support over a two day initial training period.

The MHRC program will be a free asset to schools and communities to utilize at their discretion. This will be a volunteer driven group that will function similarly to the state’s Medical Reserve Corps which currently responds to disasters under the Arkansas Department of Health. Volunteers must meet a criminal background check in order to be a certified volunteer for the MHRC.

The MHRC Training Event will feature Dr. Don Belau as our key trainer. Belau specializes in the assessment and treatment of youth who experience self-injurious behaviors and suicidal tendencies, and provides workshops on a national level in the areas of suicide postvention, self-injurious behaviors, and bullying behaviors. He has been an active member of the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition, and is currently serving as a Co-chair. Dr. Belau served in 2013-2014 as the Clinical Director of the American Association of Suicidology.
