Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help given to a person who is developing a mental health problems or who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Help is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or the crisis resolves.
MHFA for Nursing Students is taught in evidence-based training programs authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by accredited MHFA for Nursing Instructors across Australia. The course teaches nursing students to assist their peers who are developing a mental health problem, or experiencing a mental health crisis, using tailored case studies, videos and resources. The MHFA skills leaned can be applied to assist any adult.

What the course covers:
Developing Mental Health Problems: Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis (Bi-Polar, Schizophrenia), Substance Misuse, Eaiting Disorders.
Mental Health Crisis Situations: Suicidal thoughts & behaviours, Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called self-harm), Panic attack, After a traumatic event, Severe psychotic states, severe effects of alchohol & drugs, Aggessive behavious.
You will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. You will learn how to give help using the MHFA Action Plan - ALGEE
Your Self-Care and Wellbeing: We will also spend some time on this all important area - looking after you, including practical, fun strategies for taking care of your number one asset - yourself!
Course Format: This is a Blended delivery course taught online + 4 hour workshop. Participants receive a copy of both the Mental Health First Aid (3rd ed.) Manual and the MHFA for Nursing Students Supplement booklet to keep.
