Description

This course provides an introduction to a number of common mental health diagnoses often present within the child welfare system. Each diagnosis is discussed in terms of origins, symptoms, behaviors, treatment, interventions, and cultural considerations. It also includes information and helpful tips about common co-occurring or dual diagnoses.

This interactive course engages participants with opportunities to practice the techniques, answer reflection questions, and take short comprehension quizzes to develop expertise in the program.

Topics include better understanding of:

  • Attachment Disorder
  • Depression & Anxiety Disorders
  • Behavior disorders
  • Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
  • Trauma & Resiliency
    • Commonly prescribed Medications (psychotropic)

Youth Care & Beyond employees will:

  • Learn to recognize mental health or behavioral disorders
  • Be aware of signs and symptoms
  • Learn how to use effective tools such as empathic listening and relationship building
  • Explore common and potential triggers for mental and behavioral health issues.
  • Learn to assist in treatment through de-escalation, sanctioned physical restraint, and assault prevention.
  • Better understand the counseling process, including relationship building, assessment, diagnosis and treatment, and can work with the client’s therapist.
  • Become familiar with common medications prescribed for disorders and side effects.
