Mental Fight (Poetry Performance)
Thu, May 11, 2017, 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM BST
Part of THE WILL PROJECT
Ben Okri is an author and poet and wrote Mental Fight for the dawning of the millennium. The Times called it, “An angry, hopeful, weary, wary, epic reveille to the human spirit.” It is indeed that and so much more. It’s themes include the past, present and future (where we have been, where we are and where we may be heading) the unknown, the imagination as creator, us as co/creators, magnificence and wonder, individual and collective potential, fearlessness and courage, transformation, the will, fear, love and Light.
“Accept no limitations to our human potential
We have the power of solar systems
In our minds.
Our rage is powerful.
Our love is mighty.
Our desire to survive is awesome.
Our quest for freedom is noble and great.”
The notion that humanity is in the throes of an evolutionary imperative and a resulting shift in consciousness is I believe, central the the poem. At one point the poem announces,
“Transcending the political
Hinting at the evolutionary”
However, this “evolutionary shift” is not something that is merely happening to us…we are the very act itself!
“Humanity is at it most radioactive
Fusing and fissioning
Giving off energies abundant
Like so many little solar systems.
Hurtling out so many seeds
Like the fertile seasons in great forests.
Out of these energies,
Out of time’s sifting
Will come a new future
Unrecognisable to those of us who live
And breathe now.”
