Description

Limited seats are available! Reserve now! I picked up two gallons of Pennsylvania Dutch apple cider for the Toast to Mencken's Legacy and I'll be picking up a specially designed Mencken Memorial Cake for the event on Friday. But you can't have a slice unless you are there!

H.L. Mencken, iconic journalist, writer, magazine editor, authority on American linguistics, controversial literary and cultural critic, essayist and scholar on American English, died January 29, 1956 at his home at 1524 Hollins Street.

The Society for the Preservation of H. L. Mencken's Legacy will present an engaging hour of famous Mencken quotes and comments to honor his memory and the anniversary of his death. Many are humorous, some are scathing, cynical is another word to describe many of the quotes, regardless of the content the audience will be subject to an array of controversial quotes and comments designed to stimulate a reaction.

Actor, theatre director and founder of the Edgar Allan Poe National Theatre, Alex Zavistovich will present this entertaining program. Alex says, "I'm truly honored to present the quotes and musings of such a truly historic figure in the history of American letters! Many of these quotes are still being used by politicians, newspapers and political commentators. Baltimore is blessed to have not only the Poe House but now the H.L. Mencken House available to the public!"

In addition to the quotes, passages from his autobiography "Happy Days" where Mencken recalls memories of a safe and happy boyhood growing up in Union Square and Baltimore during the 1880's and celebrates a way of life that he saw swiftly changing from a time of straw hats and buggy rides to trains and bread lines will be included with the quotes.

At the conclusion of the presentation a specially designed Mencken Memorial Cake will be enjoyed by the audience along with a Toast to Mencken's legacy will conclude the event. Pennsylvania Dutch apple cider will be provided. Unfortunately we cannot serve alcohol, sorry!

Admission is free but this is a ticketed event. Seating is very limited.

Parking is on street, no meters.

The H.L. Mencken House is directly across from the beautiful Union Square Park.

Please visit our facebook page at H.L. Mencken for updates.

The H. L. Mencken House is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Baltimore City Landmarks list.

The site can be considered among the Nation's most significant house museums associated with an American man of letters!
