Event Details

This event will be the first shelter and settlements forum held in the region.

The first day will focus on learning from past experiences of shelter and settlement responses in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by actively engaging actors using case studies from the Shelter Projects publication* and the Settlement Approaches in Urban Areas Compendium.** Day one will also include an informal consultation to inform the development of an area/settlement based approach guidance note, which will further support the rollout of the approach across the MENA region. In addition, the Arabic version of the online Shelter and Settlements Course will be released.

The second day is intended to be an informal forum for exchange of ideas for shelter and settlement practitioners in the MENA region and beyond. Building on the learnings and outcomes emerging from the first day, the forum will review some of the best practices in the region, looking at how learnings can be transferred between countries, concentrating on a number of themes and shelter and settlement approaches in the region.

Day 1 (10 July): MENA Shelter Projects Workshop and more

  • Shelter Projects case studies;
  • Settlement approaches in urban areas;

* Shelter Projects ( is a bi-annual publication which compiles case studies and overviews of shelter and settlement responses in support of disaster- and conflict-affected populations, implemented by international organizations, UN agencies, NGOs and host governments. The workshop aims at converting this body of knowledge – now including over 230 case studies from over 60 organizations and 80 countries – into a vehicle for active learning and dissemination, with the long-term objective of providing further coherence in future national and international responses to shelter needs.

** Including 31 case studies from 20 organizations, this compendium consolidates current practice on multisectoral, settlement-based approaches in response to urban crises, identifying common challenges, constraints and lessons. This and more at:
