Event description

Description

Note: This course runs across multiple dates. All sessions must be booked at once. The schedule is: 1.30pm-5pm on every second sunday from March 25 to June 3. (March 25, April 8, April 22, May 6, May 20, June 3).

Learn the secrets of compelling memoir.

A ‘memoir’ is a slice of your life. It is primarily about you and how you were affected or changed by the matter you describe in your memoir. The secret of good memoir writing is to give context, texture and meaning to the slice of your life you have chosen to write about. This workshop is suitable for writers operating at any level.

Over the ten weeks of the course, you will:

  • Shape your material into memoir form;

  • Practice the techniques of fiction-writing – dialogue, setting, character, plot – in relation to your memoir;

  • Experiment with the use of ‘voice’ and find the voice you need for this project;

  • Use the ‘homework’ option to your own advantage; and

  • Aim to get your first draft to near completion.

Bring your writing materials, preferably some form of pen and paper.

About the Tutor

Biff Ward is the author of the literary memoir, In My Mother’s Hands, which was short-listed for the NSW Premier’s Prize for non-fiction 2015 and the WA Premier’s Prize 2016, long-listed for The Stella Prize 2015 and winner of the Canberra Critics’ Circle Award 2014 for nonfiction.

In 1984, her ground-breaking book, Father-Daughter Rape, one of the first in the world about child sexual abuse, was published in the UK and the US. It went on into several editions and was widely used as a text in the field.

Biff was on the selection panel for Varuna Fellowships, 2013-15. Teaching creative writing is an activity she enjoys exceedingly.
