Memoir, and more broadly speaking creative nonfiction, is an intriguing genre – one that is compelling to readers and writers alike, as can be seen in its appearance not just in books and articles, but also increasingly in blogs, which make the genre even more accessible. Yet the writing of creative non-fiction presents unique challenges: truth-telling with both art and accuracy; understanding purpose and avoiding self-indulgence; and (in the case of memoir in particular) navigating the boundary between the private self and public expression. In this workshop, we will explore the particular features, possibilities, and challenges of the genre. Participants should bring a (typed) draft of a short memoir or creative non-fiction piece, between 500 and 1500 words. (The piece can be an excerpt from a longer work.)
