Join the Manhattan Beach Historical Society at the Manhattan Beach Public Library on December 7th at 5:30 PM for a General Membership Meeting, and a special documentary film screening of California Women Win the Vote. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Martha Wheelock and Jane Guthrie.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

Face masks will be required at all times inside the library. Capacity at this event has been limited per safety regulations at the library. Online registration is required to attend this event.

ABOUT THE FILM:

When California women won their right to vote in 1911, California was only the sixth state to grant women equal suffrage and nine years before the Federal amendment. This film celebrates that campaign with historical materials, photographs and live action re-enactments. Since California was won not by big suffrage marches but by one-on–one canvassing, innovative marketing tactics, persistent press, auto tours, rallies, and street corner speakers, there is no stock footage. Thus our script is drawn from first-hand accounts, newspaper reports, and photo research from cities and small towns. The re-enactments use “actual” participants – Clara Foltz, Charlotte Whitney, Katherine Edson, Maud Younger, John Braly, Elizabeth Watson and Maria Lopez -- to tell their perspective.
