Staff turnover has negative ramifications for service quality, is costly for organizations, and negatively affects remaining employees. Turnover rates in human service settings reached over 100% during the SARS-COV-2 pandemic and remain high. These numbers have highlighted the need to proactively prevent turnover by using research-supported practices. The purpose of this presentation is to teach supervisory skills that build a positive work culture, facilitate teamwork, and decrease turnover. Hands-on activities will supplement didactic instruction.

Learning Objectives

  • The participant will be able to describe negative effects of staff turnover.
  • The participant will be able to identify proactive and reactive supervisory practices to build a positive work culture.
  • The participant will be able to identify barriers to effective supervision and brainstorm how to resolve.

Melmark’s senior staff contribute to the global research field by conducting training sessions in applied behavior analysis and special education for local and national professionals; presenting research posters, papers, and symposia at regional and national conferences; and publishing research studies in peer-reviewed research journals. About Melmark New England
Melmark New England was developed in 1998 to meet educational, rehabilitative, and vocational needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), acquired brain injury, neurological diseases, dual diagnosis, and severe challenging behaviors.

The three founding senior staff have over 60 years of experience in Massachusetts providing high quality special education and clinical treatment services to children, adolescents, adults, and their families. Melmark New England has a reputation for treatment excellence and has achieved remarkable results on behalf of the children served.

About Melmark Pennsylvania
Melmark Pennsylvania provides special education, residential, vocational and therapeutic services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The original program was established in 1966 by Paul and Mildred Krentel, whose youngest daughter Melissa was born with Down syndrome. Melmark has expanded its services over the years to additional special needs populations and into residential services on its campus and within communities throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

About Melmark Carolinas
Melmark Carolinas was established after we researched areas in the US with the greatest need for Melmark’s model for success. During this research, we found that children in The Carolinas were not receiving Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and desperately needed high-quality, evidence-based services. Melmark Carolinas specializes in serving those students who require a more specialized special education and clinically sophisticated environment than is available in a public school setting.

Vision
Our vision is to expand and raise the quality of service delivery systems throughout the country by disseminating and replicating the Melmark Model of Program Development and Clinical Treatment.

Melmark is Mission First. Every Individual, Every Day.
